The Business Model Canvas template prepared special for your GoodNotes App and designed by Alexander Osterwalder and Yves Pigneur, provides a strategic and powerful way to understand and plan your business. Collaborate with your team to find a better way to explain your business.

What is the Business Model Canvas?

Created by Alex Osterwalder, Business Model Canvas helps you determine and align your business activities in a simple and creative way. Filling out the canvas, you’ll constantly be cognizant of the big picture of your project.

The canvas provides you with nine key business elements to make sure you don’t miss any vital parts of your business. It’s composed of nine blocks: customer value proposition, customer segments, channels to reach customers, customer relationships, revenue streams, key resources, key partners, key activities, and cost structure.

When do you use the Business Model Canvas?

Use the Business Model Canvas when you want to describe the business model of your business or pivot it. This canvas is more appropriate for existing businesses than for emerging ones. Keep in mind that the Business Model Canvas should be reviewed periodically, as all the factors listed there can change over time.

5 benefits of using a business model canvas

1. Provides a structure for ideation

We’ve all experienced brainstorming sessions that veer off-topic or become unwieldy. One of the benefits of the Business Model Canvas is that it provides some structure for participants to share and cluster ideas.

2. Focuses you on your value proposition

It can be easy to get distracted by all of the variable factors involved in running a business. The value proposition is at the heart of the entire Business Model Canvas, so you can continually focus on the reason why your business exists. You should use your value proposition as a guiding star to give you direction as you fill out all other parts of the canvas.

3. Is fast to complete

Intimidated by the idea of a business plan? Try using the Business Model Canvas instead – it’s a single-page, visual document that lends itself to ideation and iteration. Fill it out in a couple of hours, and then start getting feedback immediately.

4. Provides a holistic view of your business

With the Business Model Canvas, you can see how all of the elements of your business are interrelated and inform or affect each other. This provides you with a better understanding of how your business operates as a system or ecosystem.

5. Gives you a central document to share externally

Once you’ve filled out your Business Model Canvas, you can share it widely, get feedback, and make any needed updates. Because the visual presentation is easy to grasp and understand, teams, stakeholders, advisors, and partners should find the canvas to be relatively straightforward and easy to understand.
